Auto Liability Myth #5 – “I’m covered if I use my vehicle for work”

Will your personal auto policy cover you if you use your personal vehicle for work purposes? Personal auto insurance policies are specifically designed to provide coverage while using your vehicle for personal reasons. Examples of personal use include: driving for leisure, taking your kids to and from school, going to the store, or driving back and forth to work.

If you regularly operate your vehicle for job-related reasons, such as hauling supplies to and from job sites, transporting people for a fee (i.e. Uber or Lyft), or visiting business clients, then you may need a commercial auto policy. Most standard personal auto insurance policies exclude coverage for accidents or damages that occur while driving your vehicle for pay.

If you drive your personal vehicle for work purposes, it is especially important to discuss these activities with a licensed agent. There may be low-cost options, alternatives, or even changes that could be made to your current policy that would provide the coverage you need. That’s why at Rue Insurance, our licensed agents are available to speak with you one-on-one, to develop a customized insurance plan that fits your unique needs.
