Spring Cleaning Tips to Help Reduce Your Risk of an Insurance Claim

These tips are simple tasks you can add to your spring cleaning list to reduce your risk of expensive property damage and/or an insurance claim.

Change Batteries and Filters

Change the batteries in your smoke and carbon monoxide detectors to reduce the risk of catastrophic fire damage. Change the filters in your HVAC system to keep your system running smoothly and avoid equipment breakdown.

Clean your Dryer

Dryer lint is extremely flammable, so be sure to clean out the vents, exhaust hose and trap of your dryer.

Check your caulk

Check the caulk around doors and windows for any cracks where water can leak in. Also check around the tub/shower and kitchen sink. Small leaks can go unnoticed and become big mold issues.

Assess the exterior of your home

Check the roof for any ice/snow damage or missing shingles. Check for any loose siding or mildew/mold spots, as these could indicate hidden water damage. Check basement window wells or crawlspace vents for any overgrowth or debris. Check the mulch or grass soil levels around your foundation to make sure there are no areas where water can pool. Clean all the leaves and debris from your gutters, allowing water to flow freely away from your home. Trim your trees back so that they do not hang over your house, a fence, or power lines. You should also trim any shrubs or bushes that are near the home, because untrimmed shrubs can provide cover for burglars.

Check for any tripping hazards

Check your deck, porch driveway and sidewalk. Repair any loose boards or screws/nails that have popped up. Search for any cracks or loose materials that could be a tripping hazard.
