A Quick Guide to Healthcare Plan Options

By June 9, 2026June 17th, 2026No Comments

Understanding the different types of healthcare plans can be confusing. This guide aims to clarify the various options available so you can make an informed decision that suits your needs and budget.

Types of Health Plans

Health Maintenance Organization (HMO)

HMOs are generally lower-cost plans that require you to use a network of doctors and hospitals. You’ll need to select a primary care provider (PCP) who will coordinate your care and provide referrals to specialists when necessary. This structure helps keep costs down but limits flexibility.

Preferred Provider Organization (PPO)

PPOs offer the most flexibility, allowing you to see any healthcare provider without a referral, whether they are in-network or out-of-network. While out-of-network care is covered, it comes with higher cost-sharing. Additionally, you are not required to choose a PCP.

Point of Service (POS)

POS plans are a hybrid of HMO and PPO plans. You will benefit from staying in-network and using a PCP, but you also have the option to go out-of-network at a higher cost. Each time you seek care, you can decide which route to take.

Exclusive Provider Organization (EPO)

EPOs require you to use in-network providers like an HMO, but you can see specialists without a referral. A PCP is not necessary, and out-of-network care is generally not covered except in emergencies.

High Deductible Health Plan (HDHP)

HDHPs focus on a cost structure that can be part of an HMO, PPO, POS, or EPO plan. They offer the lowest monthly premiums but require you to pay more out-of-pocket before coverage begins. HDHPs also provide access to tax-advantaged accounts, such as a Health Savings Account (HSA) or Health Reimbursement Arrangement (HRA), to help manage medical expenses.

Making Your Decision

Before selecting a healthcare plan, consider your individual healthcare needs. Review plan costs, flexibility, coverage, and convenience to ensure you choose the best option for you. If you have questions about your plan options, contact your HR department for further assistance.
