Late spring and early summer are fast approaching.  Many projects may involve cutting wood or removing trees and debris from a site.  Chainsaws can be a great tool for such tasks, but users need to be aware of the safety requirements for this power tool.

Risks of Using a Chainsaw

Using chainsaws in a clearing operation or to cut timber or rough grade wood at the jobsite can be very hazardous. It is imperative that the following safety precautions be employed by all workers using chainsaws.

  • Only utilize chainsaws with factory installed safety features. (e.g.) kickback guard, throttle interlock, vibration reducers, high engine idle latch, hand guard.
  • Dress properly, safety shoes, cuff less, heavyweight or padded pants, hard hat, eye &
    hearing protection, non-slip gloves.
  • Inspect the saw before use.  Check for: loose screws or bolts, chain lubrication, tension & sharpness, damage to guide bar, clean dry handles.
  • Start the chainsaw on clear ground, away from all others.
  • Never carry the chainsaw while it is running.
  • Use extra care when cutting small trees or limbs, avoid bounce back of the cutting edge.
  • Avoid cutting with the tip of the saw, which can cause kickback. This can send the saw
backward and upward exposing operator to serious injury.
  • Do not reach above the shoulders to cut. If necessary use a ladder with extreme caution.

Ultimately, your safety comes down to the decisions that you make.  When using any power tool, beware of your surroundings including whether other co-workers may be in the area.  Take your time and be deliberate in safely completing your task.
